The International English Language Testing System (IELTS™) is, alongside the TOEFL test, possibly one of the most important globally recognized tests of English proficiency. Administered by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations Board and IDP Australia, it has been in operation since 1989 and currently there are more than 700,000 test takers every year from around the world.
IELTS is rapidly expanding in terms of reach, recognition and accessibility. Originally it was more relevant to Commonwealth countries (for example Britain, Australia and New Zealand) but recently it has been making serious inroads into the US academic sphere as a certification equal in recognition to the TOEFL test. What really differentiates it from the TOEFL is its adherence to face-to-face interviewing for evaluating speaking proficiency, and the provision of alternative versions for the reading and writing sections that focus on either general training/living or academic application.
